01
Read the eight abilities
Navigation, Weather, Sailcraft, Ship Repair, Command, Negotiation, Courage and Endurance are tracked separately. Sea encounters test different abilities, so a high score in one field does not solve every problem.
- Navigation and Weather support reading routes, currents and changing conditions.
- Sailcraft and Ship Repair concern working the vessel and responding to damage.
- Command and Negotiation support decisions involving people, coordination and disputes.
- Courage and Endurance matter when a situation demands nerve or physical effort.
02
Use youth to establish your build
Each youth choice grows its listed main ability and a secondary ability. Read the outcome and ability changes rather than assuming a story option always trains the same skill. The first event follows the selected background, while some later situations vary between lives.
A useful starting plan is to keep one strength you can lean on and develop a second field when the choices allow it. This is a suggested approach, not a guaranteed winning build.
03
Match companions to the problem
Companions have weather, repair or negotiation specialties. The ability improved when you recruit someone and the specialty they use to help at sea are not always identical. Read the companion card and the help hint in the crisis; assistance is most relevant when the specialty matches the encounter.
04
Keep developing in port
Port preparation also trains your captain: hull preparation develops Ship Repair, crew preparation develops Command and chart preparation develops Navigation. Your initial ship contributes too: Sparrow trains Sailcraft; Stone Bay trains Ship Repair.
Abilities are one part of survival. A damaged hull, a poor route choice or spending too long at sea can still end a life. Read the ship condition and age alongside the skills.
